| By David McKenney Sunny and hot for this afternoon's 30-lap race on the 1.53-mile BeaveRun North Course. Some competitors disdain this course for not having enough places to pass; this race proves them So Very Wrong...................... |
| At the start, 2nd-position Glenn Tupper, 3rd-gridded Jim Kearney, and 4th-qualifier Ed Womer overtook poleman Rick Shields. Gary Kittel bettered Dave Scaler for 5th. Dean Curtis had an outstanding first lap to place himself 7th, getting by Gary Blanarik, Al Spadin, and Eugene Grimes. Russell Fredericks and Rick Ruckman rounded out the field. Shields immediately began pressing to regain top spot: he slipped past Kearney on lap 3, only to have Kearney retake the next lap. Lap 4 also saw the lead change hands as Womer overtook Tupper. Lap 5 saw both pairs swap back. Lap 6 was marked by a great late-braking move by Shields into Turn 10; he gained positions momentarily but sacrificed his exit in doing this and couldn't keep the improvement by the time they crossed the line. Next lap, though, brought success for Shields as he passed Womer and Tupper for the lead. Lap 8 saw a change in the makeup of the lead quintet of Shields, Womer, Tupper, Kearney & Kittel, as Glenn Tupper suddenly fell off the pace; he pulled the Tupper family Protoform into the pits and retired from the race. The next 5 laps saw no actual changes in position among the front 4, but a mere lap chart wouldn't show the battling that was going on. One lap after another, the leading duo of Shields and Womer would emerge from turn 10 side-by-side in a drag race to the starting line; Kearney and Kittel were always within striking distance and sizing the situation up. It wasn't until lap 13 that Womer made the pass stick. Shields retaliated with a repass the next lap. and held the position until lap 16 when Womer once again took the lead. Lap 18 brought a new leader as Jim Kearney made good a double-pass on Womer and Shields. His lead was short-lived as a missed braking point in turn 10 the next lap cost him three places, leaving him behind Womer, Shields and Kittell. Womer and Shields continued swapping the lead every lap, with Kittel and Kearney mere inches behind, for the next half-dozen laps, when Shields suddenly slowed going through turn 10. His clutch gave way and he barely made it to pit-in, his day done. Further back in the field, a nice little battle was going between Dean Curtis and Dave Scaler, the duo doing their share of side-by-side drag-races out of turn 10. Eugene Grimes had been steadily recovering from losing position on the start and worked his way up to join Scaler and Curtis on lap 15. A daring double-move 2 laps from the end placed Grimes ahead of Scaler and Curtis, but just as Kearney had some laps before, Grimes lost his advantage in turn 10 the next lap, Curtis and Scaler moving by for position. Ed Womer took home the Checkered Flag today, his first win at BeaveRun. Second was Gary Kittel, and Jim Kearney was third. Dean Curtis survived the joust with Dave Scaler and Eugene Grimes for 4th; Scaler and Grimes were 5th and 6th respectively. Gary Blanarik came in 7th, Russell Fredericks was 8th. Rick Shields retired in 9th, Al Spadin survived a spin early on but pitted mid-race and retired, and Rick Ruckman pulled his Mysterian off-course on lap 13 with mechanical woes. |
